ANSBACH, Germany – To celebrate Read Across America Week, Ansbach Middle High School (AMHS) students receiving Advanced Academic Program Services (AAPS) and their 6th grade ELA teacher, Jean Arcuni, and AAPS Resource Teacher, Tricia Surinak, teamed up with the Ansbach Elementary School (AES) Cubs and 5th grade teacher, Anna Rudolph, for a joyful and collaborative Book Buddy Event.

Armed with their favorite childhood books, AMHS students visited every Kindergarten through 5th grade classroom at AES—sharing stories, laughter, and the excitement of reading with their younger peers.

What began with a few shy smiles quickly transformed into lively reading sessions and meaningful connections. Many of the middle schoolers chose to bring books they treasured from their own elementary school days, creating an instant bond with the Cubs as they read aloud.

Despite initial nerves, the AMHS students quickly settled in. In fact, they loved the experience so much that several asked if they could stay longer—and come back more often.

“It was really fun!” said Ava S., a 6th‑grade participant, beaming after reading to her group of students.

Zach K., an 8th grader, enjoyed it so much that he asked if he could remain at AES for the entire day to keep reading with the Cubs.

Teachers and staff from both schools noted that the event not only supported literacy but also fostered leadership, confidence, and community spirit among the AMHS AAPS students. The younger learners were equally enthusiastic, eager to hear stories from “the big kids” and share their own excitement about books.

The successful collaboration has sparked interest in future joint activities between AMHS and AES—strengthening the connection between the Cougar and Cub communities.

The Book Buddy Event was a celebration of reading, mentorship, and the joy of learning together. It set the stage for more shared experiences and continued partnership across the Ansbach schools.
